Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our Jerpoint Abbey and riverside walks
Absolutely. Our riverside paths are flat and easy-going, with plenty of rest points along the way. We keep groups small and move at a comfortable pace—think leisurely stroll, not hiking challenge. Most of our guests are returning visitors who tell us they wish they'd done this years ago.
The Jerpoint Abbey tour runs about 90 minutes, including time to explore the restored cloisters and hear the stories behind the stonework. Our riverside walks are flexible—you can do 45 minutes or a couple of hours depending on how you're feeling that day. We never rush.
Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential—the paths can be uneven near the abbey, and the riverside can be damp underfoot. We recommend layers, as Kilkenny weather changes quickly. Bring water and a light snack. On sunny days, sunscreen and a hat are a good idea too.
We do both. Our regular scheduled walks run year-round, but if you'd like to bring a group of friends or family, we're happy to arrange a private tour. Just get in touch—we can often fit you in within a week or two depending on availability.
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) are magical—the gardens are in bloom or showing beautiful color, and the weather's mild without the summer crowds. Summer's lovely too if you don't mind other visitors. Winter's quieter and has its own charm, though it can be muddy underfoot. Check our seasonal guide for more details.
Yes, there's free parking right at the abbey. It's about 15 minutes from Thomastown town center. If you're coming from further afield, we can suggest accessible routes and places to stop on the way. See our facilities page for more information.
